Supernatural: Good Luck, Bad Luck and No Luck At All

Ok, that was just loads of fun – and a nice balance to last week’s creep-fest. We loved watching the boys do all that physical comedy – pratfalls, slapstick fight sequences, over-the-top disasters. What was your favorite slapstick moment?

We also loved seeing how the boys reacted to the luck – both good and bad. Sam was suspicious and bewildered by his run of good luck, both because he knew it couldn’t last and because there’s a part of him that seems to think good things happening to him are just wrong. That made his reactions when his luck turned all the more entertaining – he just does hangdog suffering so well! How adorable was he when he lost his shoe in the sewer, or when he reacted to the fire in his hotel room? He just knew this was going to happen!

Dean, on the other hand, is a live-in-the-moment kind of guy. Yeah, the rabbit’s foot is evil, but they might as well take advantage of their luck as long as they can. We loved his gleeful turn during the fight scene in Sam’s hotel room – “I’m Batman!” But even with that happy-go-lucky attitude, he’s still able to take care of business and think on his feet. We loved his solution when Bela confronted them at the curse-removal ritual. She’s a girl who only responds to self-interest, so the only thing he could do was make their interests intersect. Good move, Dean!

Speaking of Bela – what did you think of her? We kind of love her – there’s something refreshing about a character who really doesn’t care about good or evil or anything but her own comfort. We wouldn’t want to see her all the time, but she’ll be fun in small doses.

And in between all the good luck/bad luck action, there were plenty of other developments to keep up interested. Gordon returns – he’s still in prison, but we have a feeling that won’t last for long. He’s still convinced that Sam Winchester must die – heck, he seems to say that every other sentence – and he’s not going to listen to anyone who says any different. He’s enlisted help from other Hunters, so that ratchets up the tension.

The cast seems like such a tight knit group. Initially was it a little weird joining the show or did they make you feel like one of the family right away?

You would think it might be a little weird to come into a show after it has been on for awhile but everyone was really nice and gracious and right away made me feel like their little sister.

There is a a lot of controversy from the fans about adding you and Katie to the cast this year. Have you heard about this controversy and how do you feel about it?

Yeah I have definitely heard about it.  I understand where the fans are coming from because they are very protective of these guys and don't want these girls coming on to the show especially as love interests or to dumb down the show in any way.  But our characters are not being brought on to be love interests for the boys we are there to truly make their lives very difficult and nothing more.  But it is exciting to join a show that has such a great fan base and is protective of the characters and I do understand their being wary.

Supernatural producers had to be holding their breath last week with the introduction of the much reviled new character of Ruby (Katie Cassidy).  Fans have been pre-hating, the press has been pre-hating, and Dawn Ostroff is no doubt already sharpening the CW axe, so success was somewhat crucial.  As it was, the intro was just a teaser - albeit a wedged in teaser with a thoroughly comic snarl -  which gave fans every reason to say “We'll give her some more time.”  Well, episode two is upon us, and if you like spoilers, you might get a slightly sinking feeling about how Ruby plays into episode two.

The episode itself is a shot back into the episodic mode for Supernatural.  Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) are on the lookout for a parasite that steals children then imitates them.  The name of the episode is, cheekily, “The Kids are Alright,” and it features a subplot that has Dean thinking he may have sired a young one.

Early word on the beat is that Ruby's appearance in this episode is as wedged in as it was during the first.  She appears, again to Sam, and drops some information regarding their history and a connection that apparently is implausible, according to the source.

The point to consider, I suppose, is that the rumored love interest plan was specifically engineered to aim Ruby at Sam, and Bella – who will be introduced shortly – at Dean.  No, there is no reason not to trust Eric Kripke and his crew when they say that if the chemistry doesn't work, it won't happen, but this rings of a matchmaker from hell.

Supernatural returns tonight, and we had the opportunity a while back to connect with executive producer Robert Singer to discuss the philosophy behind the show's story-telling, what to expect from season 3 of Supernatural, and how they are weathering the backlash over the addition of new characters.

Because of technical difficulties, this is a partial transcript.

I was really curious looking over your credits, you’re actually involved with a couple of my favorite horror films, Trilogy of Terror and Burnt Offering. How do you think the old horror genre stuff compares to what’s going on with Supernatural right now?

The third season of Supernatural is nearly upon us with just two days to go before it premieres on Thursday, October 4 at 9pm on The CW.  The wait will soon be over and we'll all be back on a danger-filled adventure with the Supernatural boys, Sam and Dean Winchester.

We'll all also finally see their new much-talked about female counterparts in action to see just how much conflict or cooperation they give our series heroes.  Before we fully immerse ourselves in the continuing Supernatural saga however, let's take one final look at what we can look forward to in the next chapter of the show.

First off, regarding the nature of incoming female characters, Bela and Ruby, played by Lauren Cohan and Kate Cassidy respectively, show creator and executive producer, Eric Kripke has already assured fans that they are "not turning into One Tree Hill with monsters.”  He clarified that they are simply broadening the world of Supernatural to hopefully follow in the footsteps of previously successful genre shows like The X-Files, which has been elevated to iconic stature.

Kripke has also promised that the upcoming season will be Supernatural's most thrilling yet, saying "It's war.  We're at war...we feel this is the most exciting season yet."

Supernatural returns in just a couple of weeks with all new thrills and chills.With the yellow eyed demon portion of our story done, what is left but a little bit of war?  The new season promises a hardening of the Supernatural mythology, a welcome change for many fans, but it will also deal with the catastrophic changes of character that come in the wake of killing the demon that murdered your mother.Read on for more of what to expect.

Fans will definitely want to keep an eye out for my upcoming interview with Supernatural Executive Producer Robert Singer.Not only is there a character named after him,but also Singer is bonafide horror genre royalty and has some terrific insights into how the genre works.

On the subject of the show, Singer revealed a lot as to whether there would be the usual split of episodic versus mythology driven episodes.Surprisingly, he said the move towards a solid mythology would not be taking place.I don't want to give away any of the further tid-bits he allowed out, they are certainly better heard from the man himself.

Knowing that Supernatural will not be moving towards a more mythology driven structure may be an indication that the writers have caught on to an even more polished rendition of the Heroes formula.here Supernatural drug out one facet of its mythology over two seasons, it could very well be that Supernatural will now be focusing on a smaller arc that is resolved prior to the end of the season.

We've fallen behind in our reporting on Supernatural fan activity (and trust us, we'll be making that up to you soon), but this article caught our eye. It seems you Supernatural fans aren't content with creating fan art that knocks our socks off. No, you've got to go and help save the world, too.

A homeless shelter in the fictional Winchesters' very real hometown of Lawrence , Kansas , got a donation of more than $1,000 collected from Supernatural fans the world over. Another $1,000 went to SOS Children’s Villages, an international charity.

The donations were collected and organized through the website Fandom Rocks, and were spearheaded by Dana Stodgel of Champaign , Ill. , Rebecca Mawhinney of Canada and Brande Ruiz, of Grass Valley , Calif.

If you missed out on the first drive, fear not: The group is organizing a second drive, and you can vote on which Lawrence-area charity should get the donation.

The Winchester brothers have opened the gates of hell and allowed seven of the deadliest demons in all creation to walk the Earth, and that is only the beginning of their problems.  Supernatural.begins its third season with a radical change in narrative, this time focused on finishing the war they have started while Dean (Jensen Ackles) faces a looming death pact, and Sam (Jared Padalecki) struggles against a dark destiny.

Supernatural fans have had their first look at Supernatural's new girls thanks to Michael Ausiello at TV Guide who scored the first exclusive pictures of Kate Cassidy (Ruby) and Lauren Cohan (Bella) in action.  At the same time, he also reiterated what most Supernatural fans should know by know: the girls are definitely not being introduced as potential love interests for Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki).  Regardless, they still look pretty snazzy considering they are supposed to be playing battle hardened individuals. Will Supernatural fans bite?

The good - and not so new - news is that the girls will not be wedged in to play footsies with the boys.  In executive producer Eric Kripke's words, they are actually antagonists.  Who is to blame for the love interest rumors?  Maybe whoever put together the casting sides who was sure to include sexual advances and double entendres of the lusty variety.  It doesn't really matter, not yet anyways.

"There's a misconception that they're being introduced as love interests. They're not; they're being introduced as antagonists," Kripke told Ausiello.  However, he did follow up with "If the chemistry is there, and we see the sparks, and we want it to happen, and the fans want it to happen, it'll happen."  Nothing in there about what if Dawn Ostroff wants it to happen.

From the two shots it is hard to tell if the girls are going to work as tough cookies.  Katie Cassidy is wearing a slight believable sneer that Billy Idol would definitely not approve of, and Cohan is holding a Desert Eagle with a nearly perfect automatic pistol two hand grip, but doesn't have the steely glare to match, more like doey eyes.

Of course the flop factor comes when they start to move and talk, that is what we will have to wait and see.  To see the pics, visit Ausiello's column here.

'Supernatural' Stars to Attend Convention Saluting Various Genre Series

Creation Entertainment, a company that produces conventions for fans of genre film and television, is holding a tribute convention in November. Among the shows that the company is saluting is the CW's Supernatural, and according to their website, series stars Jared Padalecki  and Jensen Ackles will be attending the event.

On the paranormal drama, Padalecki and Ackles portray brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, respectively.  Sam is known to be rational and sensitive, qualities that distinguish him from Dean. Sam and Dean are demon hunters, a profession they inherited from their father.  Towards the end of the previous season, Dean makes a deal with a demon in order to bring back Sam from the dead.

Also attending the convention as special guests are Fredric Lehne and Samantha Ferris.Both actors also appear in Supernatural, with Lehne playing the Yellow-Eyed Demon and Ferris playing Ellen Harvelle.
