Supernatural: Merry Christmas from The Winchesters?

August 10, 2007

In an interview with SciFi Wire about the upcoming season of Supernatural, Eric Kripke lobbed out an interesting idea for a holiday special. We have no idea whether it will actually be filmed, but we couldn’t help but wonder about it.

"We'll never run out [of material] as long as they keep us on the air," Kripke said. "I just found a urban legend about the anti-Claus, an evil Santa Claus, the one who doesn't come to give you gifts, the one who comes to punish you when you're naughty. It's called the Belsnickel in Maryland. And we were like, 'Great. The Supernatural Christmas episode.' So there's sort of no limit to those episodes."

Like we said, no clue if Kripke is serious about the idea, but it sounds like it could be a great antidote to the “Very special holiday episodes” most other shows run at that time of year – the ones that talk about love and togetherness and trust of ones fellow man. We can see it now: “This is for all the damn underwear I got in my Christmas stocking, you evil bastard! I asked for a Nintendo, not y-fronts!”

Kripke also says the overarching mythology of Season Three will be a lot easy to grasp than that of Season Two: "I feel the mythology was great in season one. I think the stand-alones were great in season two. But I think the mythology of season two was just okay. It was too complicated. It wasn't as visceral as 'find dad.' And in season three we're back to a really visceral mythology, which is 'It's war, what do we do?' And so we're really excited about that mythology, and we feel, again, it's going to be the most exciting season yet.”

Kripke says we can expect plenty of stand-alone goodness coming up as well. Which do you prefer, mythology episodes, like All Hell Breaks Loose and Born Under a Bad Sign, or stand-alones, like Folsom Prison Blues or Tall Tales? And would you want to see a holiday special? Tell us what you think!

Will 'Supernatural' Seek an End to its Heroes Journey?

August 10, 2007

Supernatural did very well with its primarily episodic style this season.  That said, most Supernatural fans are relieved that the story is finally getting back to its mythology and pursuing the war between good and evil.   Since the show will now be focusing more on the monomythic structure that it began with, could the producers of Supernatural be working towards an end point for the series?
It's a hot topic these days.  Better to end in a controlled descent then let the fuel run out and crash and burn.  The principal has been adopted by both Lost and Battlestar Galactica.  Those shows will end on a definite time table set by the creators.

There is a lot of reason to think that Supernatural could possibly be heading in the direction, though the only question would be when.  The fact is, Eric Kripke has acknowledged using a monomythic structure in the show since season 1.  What the heck is monomyth, you ask?  Wikipedia might give you a better answer than I, depending on who has edited it recently, but essentially it is a way of say “The Heroes Journey,” a basic story structure that Joseph Campbell and Jung found popped up in every culture of the world before the phenomenon of mass communication knitted we people of Earth together.

The idea storytellers, like George Lucas and Kripke, have profited from “The Heroes Journey” is from the simple conclusion that universal themes across different cultures mean universal association.  Association means comfort.  Comfort means, well, “This show kicks ass.”

Of course the appeal of the structure isn't a recipe for instant success. Throw in bad actors, bad cinematography, and crappy editing, and it doesn't matter what ancient collective unconscious archetype you've used, you'll fail.  So let's not take any credit away from Supernatural.

The realization is, though, building an epic overarching story only works if there is a destination.  This is the “Journey” of “The Heroes Journey.”  And, that journey has a destination.

Does Kripke intend his journey to have an end?  Or will the resolution of the war pave the way into an episodic landscape where the Winchester brothers will chase their muse until the trusty impala, and the show, runs out of gas?  That, is up to the CW.
