King Penguins at Risk

Majestic Breed

The King Penguin thrives on the islands at the northern reaches of Antarctica and the southern oceans, like this grouping, photographed in the Falkland Islands .

Hearty Bunch

A colony braves a blizzard on Australia 's Macquarie Island . The birds have four layers of feathering to keep themselves warm.

Keep on Swimming
In their foraging trips, the birds will repeatedly dive to depths of over 350 feet and sometimes over 700 feet.

Preening

Like Emperor Penguins, with whom they are often confused, the King Penguin has a white belly, silver-grey back and blackish heads. The King Penguin is distinguished by its smaller size and yellow feather "ear muffs".

Out for a Stroll

The penguins at the Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa , Japan are released every day in winter for exercise.

Special Guests

Visitors at the Zurich Zoo are permitted inside the penguin enclosure, where, it seems, the birds are anxious to give their visitors a tour.

Cute Chick

A newborn King Penguin matures for 14 to 16 months before heading into the sea. The mating season is timed so that the matured chick will hit the water when food is most plentiful.

Colony

In the new study, scientists calculate that high sea surface temperatures in the penguins' wintering range has diminished the amount of food available to them, thereby threatening their survivability.

Squawker

A resident of the Tokyo Zoo speaks out.

Pair of Kings

Though the King Penguin population is stable for now, the study observes that the slightest rise in temperature — even half a degree Fahrenheit — could have disastrous results.
